Ab-Avon has Spent $13.6K on Investigator in Data Breach

ABINGDON — An agreement-for-services document sheds light on when Abingdon-Avon District 276 hired a private investigator to look into a breach of its data management system.

And a billing invoice — approved by District 276 before payment — shows on April 12 the district paid $13,636.60 to Garrett Discovery, Inc. of Decatur for services that commenced Feb. 5.

But it is not clear to what extent Garrett Discovery’s services still are being utilized. The district and its superintendent have, however, made it clear “an investigation” into the breach of its Skyward data management system “continues” — a point reiterated by District 276 Superintendent Chad Willis and District 276 School Board President David Serven following a pair of executive session meetings that lasted a combined eight hours.

It also is not clear if Willis sought District 276 School Board’s input before hiring the investigators Feb. 5. He said because of the nature of the investigation he cannot comment on any aspect of it.
