Social Media Discovery: Visualizing an Individual’s Online Footprint

Digital Forensic Experts at Garrett Discovery have the ability to fully investigate an individual’s public online presence using sophisticated forensic tools. These tools have the ability to go beyond what is visible on a user’s profile.

With identifiers such as a name and date of birth, we are able to perform an extensive background check on your suspect to ensure that we have the right person of interest. When performing a background check, we can also discover potential phone numbers and email addresses that can be linked to social media accounts.

Think of it this way, upon reviewing a completed background check, we discover the email address [email protected] and a phone number. This email address and phone number can provide us with social media accounts directly associated with our subject. However, this email address also provides us with the alias profile “janedoe1988”. It is extremely common that individuals will either use the same alias across multiple accounts or the same alias with slight variations such as “jane.doe1988” or “jane_doe_1988”. This is just one of more than 100 techniques we use to discover social data.

We have the ability to pull data from over 120 social media networks, websites, platforms, and even the dark web. We also have the ability to pull public data that you cannot see, such as hidden Facebook groups, phone number to account translation, and GPS locations. This data allows us to map out a virtual web regarding an individual’s online presence.

Garrett Discovery was recently hired by a defense team in a matter involving a middle age woman who accused our client of rape.  We were provided with a single alias associated with an Instagram account said to belong to the subject’s dog. Besides this information, there were no other leads regarding the subject. All manual searches regarding the subject were unsuccessful, essentially our person of interest was a ghost, and their social media presence appeared to be limited.

When reflecting on the allegations that were made and the nature of the suspect, something was just not adding up. Upon further examination of the provided Instagram account, we discovered additional accounts that appeared to be related to the subject. Through these accounts, we discovered Instagram and TikTok accounts that provided us with additional aliases that were initially not provided by the defense team. When conducting a search with the additional aliases, we discovered accounts for our subject on OnlyFans, FetLife (sexual fetishes), and PornHub. All accounts contained pornographic images of the subject where she solicited her fantasy of being raped, instances where she invited men over to rape her, and blogging about her experiences. The subject also bragged on these sites about luring homophobic men into her home, taking advantage of them, and beating them. It is important to note that all cases are not this extreme, and we are not laying judgment or saying our client is innocent or guilty. What this shows is an extreme amount of data that can be retrieved, even when a Google search returns no results regarding a suspect.

Through the use of expert techniques and forensic software possessed by our Digital Forensic Experts, Garrett Discovery is able to provide you with a single comprehensive report that can be utilized in either civil or criminal litigation.
